Where nerve signals from the brain are not delivered to the muscle because of a neurological condition, we can use a device to stimulate targeted muscle groups to work in the same way that they would if they received a signal from the brain, via an individual’s nerves.
The device is set up to deliver an electrical signal to a chosen muscle or muscle group at a chosen point during a person’s walk, usually when the foot is lifted from the ground when taking a step. This causes the muscle to activate and function as it would if controlled by the brain. There is a second trigger which turns the signal off, usually when the foot makes contact again with the ground, and the muscle relaxes.
