Functional electrical stimulation (FES)

FES can be useful for many people living with the effects of a neurological condition, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke or spinal cord injury (SCI).

Where nerve signals from the brain are not delivered to the muscle because of a neurological condition, we can use a device to stimulate targeted muscle groups to work in the same way that they would if they received a signal from the brain, via an individual’s nerves.

The device is set up to deliver an electrical signal to a chosen muscle or muscle group at a chosen point during a person’s walk, usually when the foot is lifted from the ground when taking a step. This causes the muscle to activate and function as it would if controlled by the brain. There is a second trigger which turns the signal off, usually when the foot makes contact again with the ground, and the muscle relaxes.

There can be many benefits from the use of FES, including:

  • preventing your toes from catching on the ground when walking,
  • improve the quality of your walking  and speed
  • reduce the effort needed to walk
  • increase your walking distance
  • improve your balance
  • improve muscle strength
  • reducing spasticity (tightness in your muscles)

One of the major uses for FES is to address foot drop.

At Enhance Orthotics, we offer the opportunity to trial an FES device in clinic to see if it suits you.

FES may be suitable to use in place of an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) or even in combination.

FES can be helpful for people living with the effects of many neurological conditions, including:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury (SCI)
  • Cerebral Palsy
